Titus 2:1 But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.

Doctrine is simply teaching or instruction.

Matthew 12: 5-7 (NIV) Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.

Mark 7:8-12 (NIV) You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.” And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother.

Matthew 6:1-4 (NIV) 1-4 Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Matthew 6:5-6 (NIV) 5-6 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Being in relationship with God, we seek His favor, not that of people.

Titus 2: 2-10 (ESV) 2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.  3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,  4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,  5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. 6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.  7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity,  8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.  9 Slaves are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative,  10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.

Soul Tattoo: Rules build character and integrity as we learn to follow in obedience.

Temperance keeps us sound in mind, judgement, and curbing passions and desires

Respect is a reflection of your own self-worth.

Reverence reflects being a living sacrifice.

Self-control reflects someone who is well balanced from God’s perspective.

Live lives of integrity within the cultural norms as much as possible.

Living lives that reflect the life of Christ make following Christ attractive to others.

Titus 2:11-15 (ESV) 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,  13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,  14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.  15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
