Who do we honor?

Romans 12:10 (NIV) 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Romans 12:9-11 (ESV) 9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.

The level of honor you give is determined by the amount of value you perceive.

 

  • When you honor something, you protect it!
  • When you honor something, you praise it!
  • When you honor something, you prioritize it!

WHO DO WE HONOR?

1 Peter 2:17 (NIV) Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

  1. Honor others. 
    • 2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NLT) 1You should also know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control; they will be cruel and have no interest in what is good. 4They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5They will act as if they are religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. You must stay away from people like that.
    • 1 Peter 2:17 (ESV) 17Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
    • 1 Peter 2:17 (MSG) 17Treat everyone you meet with dignity.
    • Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV) Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
    • Romans 12:10 (NKJV) 10Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.

  2. Honor authority. 
    • Romans 13:1-2 (NIV) Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
    • Government.
    • Workplace/school. 
    • Family.
    • Spiritual. 
      • 1 Timothy 5:17 (NIV) 17The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.
      • 1 Timothy 2:1-4 (NIV) I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone–for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

  3. Honor marriage.
    • Hebrews 13:4 (NIV) 4Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
    • 1 Peter 3:7 (NLT) 7In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.
  4. Honor parents. 
    • Ephesians 6:2-3 (NIV) “Honor your father and mother”–which is the first commandment with a promise–“that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

  5. Honor age. 
    • Leviticus 19:32 (NIV) 32Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD.
    • Job 12:12 (NIV) 12Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long-life bring understanding?

  6. Honor nature. 
    • Genesis 1:28 (NIV) 28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

  7. Honor God. 
    • Malachi 1:6 (NIV) 6“A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the LORD Almighty.
    • Psalm 29:2 (NIV) 2Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.
