HONOR: The Definition

10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10 (NIV)

WHAT IS HONOR?

HONOR: time (tee-may) to value, respect, or highly esteem; to treat as precious, weighty or valuable…

DISHONOR: atimos (at’-ee-mos); to dishonor; to treat as common or ordinary.

HEBREW: kâbôd kâbôd kaw-bode’, kaw-bode’…properly weight; but only figuratively in a good sense, splendor or copiousness: glorious (-ly), glory, honor (-able).

GREEK: τιμάω timaō 1) to estimate, fix the value 1a) for the value of something belonging to one’s self 2) to honor, to have in honor, to revere, venerate…

  • The reason our culture is dishonoring is because people aren’t honoring God!

23You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! Psalm 22:23 (NIV)

13The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me…” Isaiah 29:13 (NIV)

WHERE IS THE HONOR?

6“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the LORD Almighty. “It is you, O priests, who show contempt for my name. But you ask, ‘How have we shown contempt for your name?’’ Malachi 1:6 (NIV)

1“And now this admonition is for you, O priests. 2If you do not listen, and if you do not set your heart to honor my name,” says the LORD Almighty, “I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not set your heart to honor me.” Malachi 2:1-2 (NIV)

Soul Tattoo: I HONOR WHAT I VALUE.

1Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! 3Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.” 5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and them. Mark 6:1-5 (NIV)

  • Familiarity causes dishonor.

  • Offenses cause dishonor.

Soul Tattoo: I HONOR WHAT I VALUE.

1Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. 2“Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: 3If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.” 4Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. Ephesians 6:1-4 (NLT)

HOW DO I FUNCTION IN A CULTURE OF HONOR?

1.) Honor is not FLATTERY.

  • 5To flatter friends is to lay a trap for their feet. Proverbs 29:5 (NLT)
  • 3Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Philippians 2:3 (NLT)

2.) Honor in key RELATIONSHIPS.

  • 21And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For a husband is the head of His wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of His body, the church. 24As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. 25For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up His life for her. Ephesians 5:21-25 (NLT)
  • A Wife honors her husband by expressing respect for him—a kind of awe and regard for his ability and leadership. She does not belittle him —although she knows his weaknesses better than anyone else. But she supports & encourages him and BRINGS out the BEST in him by honoring him before others and valuing him as her husband.

3.) We learn to HONOR at HOME. (Children)

  • 4Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 (NLT)

4.) The devil is in the DETAILS of dishonor.

  • 27and do not give the devil a foothold. Ephesians 4:27 (NIV)

5.) Honor is a LANGUAGE and a LIFESTYLE.

  • 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10 (NIV)
  • 17Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. 1 Peter 2:17 (NIV)
  • HONOR:
    • Honor stands at attention
    • Honor bows in respect
    • Honor serves with passion
    • Honor gives with thoughtfulness
    • Honor speaks with affection
    • Honor looks past offenses…
    • Honor believes the best…
    • Honor is never mechanical or manipulative…
  • 9Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good… Romans 12:9 (TMSG)
  • 13The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me…” Isa 29:13 (NIV)

6.) Honor WORKS.

  •  17“Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.” 1Peter 2:17 (NKJV)
  • 12“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. Matthew 7:12 (NLT)
